Some days ago, I went to the bank to make a transaction. I was on the queue when I saw a friend who works there. While we were conversing, he made a statement that got me thinking. He said,’….I am doing what I do not like..’ I was stuck for words. Someone else might like what he is doing, but he is doing what he doesn’t like.
There are multitudinous people all over the world in this kind of shoe, because of the variform factors that discourage going for a desired career.
This includes: difficulty in securing admission into a tertiary institution, limited job opportunities, the influence of some people, poverty, the social status of a career, the gargantuan salary of some careers, the opportunities and benefits attached to some careers etc.
A career is an occupation or profession that requires training or skill and last for a specific phase of life or throughout life.
According to Oxford English Dictionary, it is a “course or progress through life (or a distinct portion of life)”.
Undoubtedly, a career is a weighty and indispensable part of our lives. It is a major determinant of our progress and fulfilment in life.
Do not allow people and circumstances to influence the choice of your career. The choice of your career should be primarily based on what you love to pursue. Katharine Whitehorn in a quote said, “Find out what you like doing best, and get someone to pay you for it.”
Ask yourself: What do I love doing? What will I like to wake up everyday to do? How do I love to influence my world? Whose life inspires me? What do I do with ease though it’s a difficult task? What attracts me most? What gives me pleasure and satisfaction? What am I good at? What is my talent/ gift(s)?
Give attention to the peculiarity of your answers. It might not be a thing; it might be a thing that can be expressed in several ways. For instance: someone like me who loves to influence her world with words, can become a public speaker, a writer, a counsellor, a teacher, a preacher and its likes. I can decide to take to one of this career, and I can explore all of it, depending on my capacity and skill.
It is also essential to seek counsel from elders to ascertain your chosen career.
Every career has its own demand. How much you’re willing to do for you career, will determine if you will get to its zenith.
A career is not like a permanent marker. It can be changed. Sought for the demands of the career you desire to change into. Sometimes, it will involve major sacrifices, but it is worth it. It’s better than living all your life doing what you don’t like.
Choose what you love to live! Live what you love! Your career, your choice!
